Different types of essay structures

The writing consists of two tasks i.e. writing task 1 and writing task 2 (essay). Task 1 is different for Academic and General exams, and Task 2 is the same for both, also worth double the band score than task 1. So, here I am going to focus on the essays and its types.

The writing task is accessed based on four criteria such as Task Response, Cohesion and Coherence, Grammatical range and accuracy, Lexical Resources. If you want to know in detail about it then you can read Writing task 2 band descriptor. Therefore before attempting the task, you must keep in mind these criteria.

Moreover, the essays are of four types, so you should carefully read the statement before writing, and to score maximum band. The question types are:

  1. Opinion type
  2. Discussion type
  3. Opinion and Discussion type
  4. Question type

In the Opinion type essays examiner asks about your opinion in the question. The example questions are:
  • To what extent do you agree with the statement or disagree with the statement?
  • Is this a negative development or positive development?

In Discussion type essays, you have to discuss the given question. The possible questions are:
  • Discuss/what are the disadvantages and advantages?
  • Discuss both views.

In the Opinion and Discussion type, the examiner asks you to discuss as well as give your opinion on the task. The possible questions are:
  • Explain both views and also give your own opinion.
  • Does the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

In the Question type, the two questions are given, and you have to answer both in the alternate paragraphs. The possible questions are:
