IELTS Speaking Band Descriptors: How they are calculated - Prof IELTS

 

IELTS speaking band scores are calculated based on 4 components and the explanation of band descriptors stated below are the explanation of British Council and IDP band descriptors:

Fluency and Coherence:

Band 5 is achieved when a student repeats words quite often while speaking and also the pace of speaking is slow. Besides, there are some over usage of sentences and tries to use complex sentences, but these sentences disturb the fluency of language.

Band 6 is achieved when a student speaks in a single stretch, but there is some hesitation and unable to link the ideas with each other. Besides, a student tries to connect two-sentence with flexibly.

Band 7 is achieved when a student easily builds the topic appropriately without any effort and can speak in one stretch without any effort; however, due to some hesitation unable to speak correct words.

Band 8 is achieved when a student fully develops the given topic and speak fluently by repeating certain words.

Lexical Resource:

Band 5 is achieved when a student just able to paraphrase by using the known and unknown sentences; however, it is quite hard to understand the vocabulary.

Band 6 is achieved when a student can use vocabulary with appropriate paraphrasing; however, there are some slightly inappropriate sentences.

Band 7 is achieved when a student uses a wide range of vocabulary with collocations and idioms to explain the various topics; however, there are some slightly inappropriate sentences.

Band 8 is achieved when a student uses a wide range of vocab with collocations and idioms to explain the various topics. Besides, accurately used the sentences without any error. 

Grammatical Range and Accuracy:

Band 5 is achieved when a student speaks sentences with less accuracy and without using properly structured sentences. Besides, inappropriate usage of comprehension.

Band 6 is achieved when a student speaks both simple and complex sentences with some problems in comprehension which occurs due to usage of these sentences.

Band 7 can be achieved when a student speaks complex sentences with fewer mistakes and slight grammatical errors.

Band 8 can be achieved a student accurately uses the variety of structured sentences consistently; however, at times there are some slips that are not counted because these occur by mistake.

Pronunciation:

Band 5 is achieved when a student makes only makes basic sentences with lesser accuracy and rarely used any complex sentences. Besides, the sentences used by a student may have some mistakes and comprehension problems.

Band 6 is achieved when a student uses difficult vocabulary words but used them with less clarity.

Band 7 is achieved when a student speaks by using pronunciation feature several times, consequently makes it easier for the listener to understand.

Band 8 is achieved when a student speaks sentences by using the pronunciation feature with no mistakes and comprehension issues.
