IELTS Writing Task 2 Band Descriptors - Prof IELTS


IELTS Writing Band Score:

The writing category in IELTS is scored based on 4 components they are as follow:

Task achievement and Task Response:

Band 5 is achieved when all the elements are not properly covered such as no relevant information and is given without the supporting ideas. Inaccurate use of colocations and vocabulary while writing an essay.
Band 6 is achieved when a student highlights all their main elements with support and examples. However, some sentences or data are not accurately used in the exam. 
Band 7 is achieved when a student highlights the main elements that are easily understandable and quite clear with the relevant support and examples. There is no unnecessary data at all; however, need some corrections in certain areas.
Band 8 is achieved when a student covers all the points with relevant support and examples. Besides, there is no correction required in any area.

Coherence and Cohesion:

Band 5 is achieved when a student does not make proper paragraphs, and information is not properly organised with linking words.
Band 6 is achieved when a student organises the information by linking devices; however, a student unable to link the sentences accurately means there is some fault in while linking and gave inappropriate referencing.
Band 7 is achieved when a student organises the information by linking devices; however, student overuses or underuses these linking words. Besides, ideas are logically arranged by using paragraphs as well as referencing.
Band 8 is achieved when a student organises the information by linking devices and properly uses these devices. Besides, ideas are logically arranged by using paragraphs and referencing.

Lexical Resource:

Band 5 is achieved when a student writes sentences using inappropriate vocabulary and also there are several grammatical mistakes with wrong spellings. Consequently, the examiner finds it difficult to read and understand the sentences.
Band 6 is achieved when the examiner can easily understand what the student is trying to say; however, there at some spelling mistakes. Besides, used understandable vocabulary with less common words.
Band 7 is achieved when a student used enough vocab and collocations within the sentences; however,  on certain occasions did some spelling mistakes and used inappropriate vocab.
Band 8 is achieved when a student used enough vocab and collocations within the sentences without any errors. Besides, a common vocabulary is used efficiently.

Grammar Range and Accuracy:

Band 5 is achieved when there a student do not properly make structured sentences; however, make complex sentences that are not properly made and these are not understandable by the examiner. Besides, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation.
Band 6 is achieved when a student writes with some errors in grammar and punctuation; however, the examiner can understand the meaning by reading the sentences. Besides, simple and complex sentences are used with some errors or need to be structured.
Band 7 is achieved when a student writes a variety of sentences with some errors in grammar and punctuation. 
Band 8 is achieved when a student writes a mixture of sentences without any error and several structured sentences are also used.
