Different types of sentence structures used in IELTS writing

I have seen many candidates who did not get the desired band score in writing exam as they stuck in between 5.5 to 6.5 band score. This is because mostly they are unable to score in the Grammatical Range and accuracy section. As we all know that IELTS writing is calculated according to four criteria if you do not know then you can read IELTS Band Descriptor.

To gain score in this section students have to vary their sentences using different sentence structures during the writing. However, they did not; therefore, they remain within this range. So here I am going to explain various types of sentences that you may use to boost your score. There are six types of sentences that should be used during writing in the IELTS exam, and I am going to explain each one in a simple language with examples in this blog.

1 Simple Sentences
2 Compound Sentences
3 Complex Sentences
4 Passive Sentences
5 Question mark Sentences
6 Conditional Sentences

The Simple Sentences are those sentences in which there is one independent clause ( subject and verb) or it has only one idea in a single sentence.

For example: look at the question prompt
The internet technology has increased our access to information.
  • People can find information on the internet. (in this sentence, I gave only one idea that is it gives information to the people.)
  • It improves people's efficiency of doing work.
  • People gain in-depth knowledge about any topic.

The Compound Sentences are those sentences in which there are minimum two independent clauses and these are joined together with the help of coordinators.

OR It has two or more ideas joined together with the help of coordinators such as and, for, but, so, or, and nor.

For example: look at the question prompt
The internet technology has increased our access to information.
  • people can find information on the internet at any instant of time, and most importantly from any place with little efforts. ( in this I gave two ideas one is "find information" and other is "with fewer efforts".)
  • The internet boosts the capability and accuracy of doing work.
  • The internet is a boon for the people, and it makes the life of the people easier.

The Complex Sentences are those sentences in which there is one dependent clause and one independent clause joined with the help of conjunctions.

OR It has two or more ideas joined together with the help of conjunctions. One should use at least four to five complex sentences in their writing.

Different types of conjunctions are:
After, although, as, because, before, even if, even though, once, since, so that, than, that, though, unless, until, when, where, whereas, who, whether, while, which, whenever and many more.

For example: look at the question prompt
The internet technology has increased our access to information.
  • When the students make projects in schools, they search for relevant information on the internet regarding the subject. ("independent clause" + "dependent clause" joined with "when")
  • People use the internet because it enhances their work efficiency.
  • Internet should be available at every place so that people could connect easily.

The Passive Sentences are made when you reverse the order of the subject and object of the active sentence.

For example: look at the question prompt
The internet technology has increased our access to information.
  • Many people enhanced their knowledge by studying through the internet.
  • The lives of many individuals are changed by the internet.

The Question mark Sentences are made by placing (?) punctuation at the end of the sentence.

For example: look at the question prompt
The internet technology has increased our access to information.
  • Is internet available at every place in India?
  • Do people find the internet helpful in their studies?

The Conditional Sentences are those sentences that start with "if".

For example: look at the question prompt
The internet technology has increased our access to information.
  • If the internet is available at every place, tourists can easily find tourist places with the help of an electronic map.
