IELTS Reading Tutorials with Examples

Reading! many students find this section quite difficult to cope with because it requires a lot of concentration to solve questions, and they either do not have the habit of reading long texts or maybe due to a lack of reading skills. Which results in a low score in the reading section. Experts analysed it and came up with certain tips and tricks to overcome this problem. Here, I am going to discuss these methods with examples so that you can understand the concepts easily.

Before jumping into the tutorials, let's first discuss in brief the reading section that comes in the IELTS exam. In the reading, there are a total of 40 questions in three sections and each section has a different paragraph. Although reading is different for the General and Academic module, the pattern is the same for both tests. But the scoring criteria is different as you score more in academic reading with fewer right answers whereas you need more correct answers to get the same band score in the general module.

Introduction about IELTS Reading test

The Reading test is different for the General and Academic module with different scoring criteria.
  1. The time limit for the test is 1 hour.
  2. The examiners will give you one booklet on which all questions are written and an answer sheet to write your answers.
  3. Unlike the listening test, you can write your answers directly to the answer sheet, and you will be given no extra time to write your answers to the answer sheet.
  4. There will be three sections in this test with a total of 40 questions.
  5. Before starting your test, read the instructions carefully given at the start of each section so that you cannot write anything extra. For example, write no more than two words and/or a number, write no more than one word and/or a number etc.
  6. The paragraphs generally are taken from academics and general activities such as history, science, animals, any events, sports etc.
  7. It is often advised that you should spend a maximum of 20 minutes on each section so that you can touch every section and complete the test on time.
  8. In general, academic reading is difficult than general reading.

How to solve the IELTS Reading test

The general rule to attempt a reading test  is given below:
  1. First, read the instructions given at the start of each section.
  2. Read the heading of the text, it will give you an idea about the paragraph and help you in making your mindset about the topic. For instance, if the topic is on technology then you divert your mind or your thoughts towards technical gadgets, the internet or what it all about.
  3. Do not start reading the paragraph without going through the questions because if you read the text first then go through the questions, it will waste your precious time and energy.
  4. Mark the keywords in the questions and paragraph, this will help you in efficiently finding all the answers with less time and efforts.
  5. Never make any assumptions about the text, write the answers as given in the paragraph otherwise your answers will be wrong.
  6. If you are not able to find an answer to any question, do not waste your time on that question just jump to another one.
  7. Read the questions carefully.
  8. Always take care of transitional words such as but, although, while etc. as they change the meaning of the sentence.
